All too often we feel that we have to prove our worth, not only to others, but to ourselves. We may feel incapable of doing or saying the right thing, or even undeserving of basic happiness. Buddhist meditation offers multiple paths for breaking free of feeling limited and stuck. One such meditation may at first seem surprising: cherishing others.

In this half-day course, you’ll learn to understand that the primary source of our insecurities is our own self-obsession, and how the practice of cherishing others brings true happiness into our lives while also dispelling the belief that we aren’t good enough. This shift in thinking helps us to
experience a stronger and authentic self-confidence grounded in the reality of who we really are.

When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often feel that we’ve been dealt an unfair hand. We ask, “Why Me?”

Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma gives us a clear and practical explanation on why things happen the way they do. But we’re not left without choices. By understanding karma we can find a clear path for changing our experiences from not so great to fantastic. Or at the very least, better. Rather than seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Understanding karma puts us in the driver’s seat of our own life.

In this half-day course, Yogi will show us how the teachings on karma can help us improve our experience of the present, heal the past, and create a more fortunate future.

We all want lasting freedom from problems and pain. The possibility of this happening can only develop within a clear, open and patient mind. As we all know, normally our need to escape from unpleasant feelings is so urgent that we become impatient and reactive and we do not give ourself the time to discover where our suffering is actually coming from. We think that things should be different from the way they are. We blame circumstances or other people for our unhappiness. What we need is the clarity and spaciousness of mind to see what is really binding us. Patient acceptance enables us to undo our suffering and creates the space for practical solutions to arise.

In this special event at KMC Williamsburg, visiting Guest Teacher, Gen Kelsang Menla will give teachings and guide us in meditations from the extraordinary book How to Solve Our Human Problems, by the Buddhist Master Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. This book is a practical guide to overcoming frustration and anger, as well as developing the superpowers of complete patient acceptance and the spiritual transformation of our suffering into powerful personal growth. Everyone is welcome!

Gen Menla has studied under the guidance of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for over 20 years and was requested by him to become the main Teacher of Kadampa Meditation Center Texas in June 2017. Gen Menla was ordained as a Kadampa Buddhist monk in 2001 and has worked and taught within the New Kadampa Tradition for many years. He brings a warm heart and joyful attitude to sharing Buddha’s teachings and the practice of meditation.
