The meditation known as Taking and Giving, in Tibetan ”tonglen”‘ has been used for centuries as a healing meditation. Not only is this meditation legendary for its physical healing properties, it is also a powerful method for healing painful mental tendencies such as insecurity, anger and hurt.

Taking and Giving practice gives rise to innumerable benefits, including boosting positive energy, purifying the mind and in particular enabling us to deal skillfully and peacefully with our daily challenges.
Joseph will introduce us to this amazing practice – which is quite simple and can be practiced by anyone – and take us deeper and deeper into this beautiful and life-enhancing method.

To ‘seize the day’ is to feel great enthusiasm about being alive and to be living from a place of purpose and intention. When we authentically seize the day we don’t sweat the small stuff. It becomes easier – and more enjoyable – to focus on the things that really matter. If we don’t seize the day we often ‘seize up’ instead, getting stuck in mental habits that make life terribly ordinary and frustrating.
By meditating on death and impermanence we begin to embrace life in an entirely new way. We cast off all sense of limitation and instead establish an experience of inner peace and purpose, making every day meaningful. Seize that!

Happiness and suffering are states of mind. If we are to experience the happiness we all long for, we must learn how to connect with that state of mind and not the ones that cause us so much pain. Part of this process entails identifying our negative patterns of thought so that we can begin to learn to let them go. This will allow us to actively replace those painful thoughts with the positive states of mind that lead to the happiness we want.

In this series we will explore how we can identify and let go of such pain-inducing patterns of thought such as anger, jealousy, obsession, anxiety and more. Buddha called such minds ‘delusions’ because they are characterized by exaggeration, which leads to them being both unpeaceful and unreliable.

Currently, we believe the harmful stories these minds are telling us, both about ourselves and the world. These stories are mistaken. Using the special meditation on the nature of the mind, we will learn how to recognize early on when we are under the influence of these harmful minds so that we will not entrust ourselves to them, but rather let them go. Changing such negative patterns of thought is hugely liberating and will open us up to a whole new joyful and creative way to experience our lives and our relationships.

There is sometimes the notion out there that being a Buddhist means giving up on enjoying the pleasures of life. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. We can learn to enjoy life more, and do so in a lasting and authentic way.

In this half-day course, Tom will explore Buddha’s teachings which show us how to truly enjoy any part of our life. Whether it is as ordinary as a cup of coffee or a sunset, as up and down as a job, or as complicated as a relationship, it all starts with understanding where happiness and enjoyment really come from.

We’ll also examine how we often confuse enjoyment for what is known in Buddhism as attachment, a deceptive state of mind that inevitably leads us to unhappiness.

With these understandings we can learn how to cultivate joy as part of our meditation practice and in daily life. In both sessions Tom will guide meditations that allow us to experience firsthand how best to enjoy.
